More information : (SK 57403968) Postern (1). Speed's map of 1610 shows a gate tower atthe top of Drury Hill (2). Remains were visible in 1745. In 1875 the remains were exposed under the Bull's Head (later 'Postern Gate Inn') and sketched prior to partial destruction. Demolition of the inn in 1910 again revealed the footings. Dobson (3) considers it to be the guard room to the Postern Gate bnuilt circa 1280-1320. No connection of a town wall to this structure could be found (but a 4 ft6 ins thick wall, shown on the plan as extending southwards from the S.W. corner of the guardroom is unexplained). (3) No longer extant. (4)
