Summary : Excavations uncovered remains of a Roman villa, probably of the winged corridor type, at Glebe Farm. A tesselated pavement, mosaics, a Roman coin and 1st - 4th century pottery was also found. Occupation of the site spanned from the late 1st century to the first of the 4th century. There are adjacent cropmarks of linear features, enclosures and a ring ditch. Scheduled. |
More information : [SK 52683166] Roman Villa [G.S.] (Site of) (1) In 1856 a tessellated pavement was found, at Glebe Farm, Barton-in-Fabis. Excavations carried out in 1933 & 1949 which were limited to small exploratory trenches beside the farm buildings suggest a villa of winged corridor type. A circular structure possibly a threshing floor was also exposed. Finds include single coins of Trajan, Crispus and an Urbs Roma, together with 1st to 4th century pottery, including Samian [AO/61:213:1] Plan. (2) The excavations have been completely covered in and the land has since been under crop. (3) What appears to be the exposed tessellated pavement is published on O.S. 25" County Series at SK 5268031660 (4) TESSELATED PAVEMENT, has disappeared. SK 526317 immediately N & NW of Glebe Farm Roman Villa. Cropmarks of linear features, enclosures and a small ring ditch. (5) NT 1 Listed as a villa site. (6) Scheduled. (7)
