HER 3197 DESCRIPTION:- A settlement shows as cropmarks on aerial photographs (pers comm R Hingley, GCCAS, 1983). The settlement lies on a hill top with lower ground to north and south. The field was under grass when the site was visited in 1983. Examination of the field to the north produced a thin distribution of flint, but no other finds were made. {Source Work 579.} 1993 - This area was mapped at 1:10,000 scale as part of the English Heritage: Thames Valley NMP project. The cropmarks seen suggest the presence of a small settlement or farmstead probably of Iron Age or Roman date, comprising of a cluster of small rectilinear enclosures, two possible hut circles and several small pits. Centred at SP 1415 0242 is a sub-square, ditched enclosure, 14m by 13m in size with a north-east facing entrance. Immediately to the south-west at SP 1414 0240, is an oval enclosure, 22m by 12m which has a west facing entrance. Abutting the inside of this enclosure at its northern end, is a smaller enclosure, 10m across, which is probably a hut circle. A second possible hut circle lies at SP 1406 0243. To the east and west of the settlement are two linear ditches, running approximately north-south. These may be the remains of field boundaries associated with the settlement.
