More information : (SK 7453 0520) Moat (NR) (1) In a field south of Tilton-on-the-Hill, is a small square moat. (2) A homestead moat slightly off square and partly water-filled, the south-east arm being possibly re-cut. Remains of a causeway can be seen in the west angle whilst on the island robber trenches mark the site of the building. See annotated 25" survey. (3)
SK 7453 0519. Moated site at Tilton. The moat is 60m square with three visible arms, that on the north being infilled. The southern and western arms are 12.0m wide and 2.0m deep, while that on the eastern side has been enlarged to make a pond 15.0m wide. There are signs of a causeway on the north side. The island has a prominent building platform 9.0m x 11.0m with surviving stone foundations of original buildings up to 0.75m high covered in turf. Scheduled (RSM) No. 17014. (4) |
