More information : The suggested site of the encounter near Belton on May 15, 1643, between the Royalists under the Hon. Charles Cavendish and the Parliamentarians under Cromwell, is the level space between the stream that feeds the modern fishponds, and Belton park gates. There is more than half a mile between these two points and the area extends inwards for considerably more. To the north-west was a hamlet called Tolthorp [see SK 93 NW 1 for Towthorpe D.M.V.] Skeletons have been found near. Belton Parish register records the burial of three men slain in Belton Fight, May 13, 1643. The Parliamentarians, although outnumbered, were victorious. (1)
