Summary : Site of Carmelite Friary founded in 1269 and dissolved in 1539. Excavations on the site of St Mark's Railway Station have recovered the plan of the church and West range, and located other outbuildings. The precinct was bounded by the High Street to the East, the River Witham to the West, St Edward's Church to the South and St Mark's Church to the North, covering an area of 70 by 95 metres. The church was at the Southern end of the site with the cloisters to the North. The church was demolished in the 15th century and rebuilt. The kitchen stood as a separate building to the West of the cloister, and continued in use as a domestic building until the 17th century. Several inhumations were discovered.
