More information : (SP 807416) Near to the Manor House Farm is a field called the Grange, in which are the remains of a dove-cote. Until recently it was surrounded by a thick stone wall, with traces of a supposed mill on a small stream at the bottom of the field. (1)
It seems probable that this field marks the site of the manor or grange held by Chicksand Priory. (2)
Site of the wall and internal soil disturbances visible. (3)
"The Grange" is under rough pasture, and the entire field shows trace of Md settlement, although no coherent pattern is visible in the W half of the field where there is much later disturbance. In the E half, centred at SP 807 416 is a main 'street' and adjacent enclosure system. No trace was found of the former stone wall, alleged mill or dovecote. This settlement possibly forms a NE extension to the deserted village of Old Woverton (See SP 84 SW 11). Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
A rapid examination of air photography (5a) shows fairly extensive earthworks and parchmarks of enclosures and buildings, probably relating to the possible grange or deserted village, extending from around Manor Farm towards Manor Cottages and the canal to the southwest (an area bounded by SP 8045 4154, SP 8062 4142, SP 8086 4191 and SP 8068 4149).
