(SX 574645) Enclosed Hut Groups & Hut Circles (NR). (1-2)

Hut Circle at SX 57406456. (3)

Centred at SX 57396456 are six type 2 huts on a southwest facing slope at 320.0m. O.D. (Type site: SX 56 NE 71). All are in poor condition with levelled interiors and most have southwest entrances. The internal diameters are from 4.0m. to 6.5m. with a mean of 5.5m. with walling up to 1.0m. high and 2.0m. thick. The huts at SX 57396452 and SX 57406451 have 'porches' outside the entrances. The close proximity with similar huts suggests association with the enclosed settlement of SX 56 NE 12.

Surveyed 1:10 000 on P.F.D./.AM. (4)

SX 5695 6476: Prehistoric and historic archaeological landscape at Trowlesworthy Warren. Scheduled. (6)

Depicted and described by Robertson and Butler. (7-8)

Centred SX 57406457. Six unenclosed hut circles 300m E of Little Trowelsworthy Tor. The huts are all slightly ovoid and have been used as repositories for surface stone clearance. Consequently the walls and interiors are partially obscured by the material derived from this later activity.
Entrances, where apparent, lie in the S quadrant.
SX 57406460. Measuring 5.8m N too S by 6.0m internally this hut has walls 1.8m wide and 0.7m high.
SX 57396461. This hut has an internal diameter of 6.1m and displays evidence of a blocked entrance in the S side. The walls measure 2.3m wide and 0.8m high.
SX 57406457. A hut circle 6.7m N to S by 6.5m internally with walls 1.4m wide and 0.6m high. The walls display evidence of internal and external facing slabs and the interior has been disturbed by rabbit burrowing.
SX 57406454. A small hut 4.9m in diameter with walls 1.4m wide and 0.7m high. An entrance lies in the S margin.
SX 57416453. A hut circle 4.5m N to S by 4.4m with walls 1.3m wide and 0.6m high. An entrance lies in the S side.
SX 57426459. An ovoid hut 7.3m N to S by 6.2m with walls 1.8m wide and 0.7m high. A break in the SW side may indicate the site of a former entrance.
These hut circles are flanked by two enclosed settlements, SX 56 SE 18 to the W and SX 56 SE 12 to the E. (9)

SX57436461. The northernmost of four stone hut circles west of Little Trowlesworthy Tor. Descheduled. (10)

At least seven Bronze Age hut circles, recorded by previous authorities, are visible as stony structures on Environment Agency 1m Lidar data flown in 2019 and 2021 Historic England orthomosaic aerial photography. The site was mapped from aerial sources in 2023 during the Historic England Dartmoor-Plym project. They measure between 7.6m and 12.5m in diameter. Six stand within the arms of a large post-medieval v-shaped drainage ditch, suggesting that they were re-purposed as part of Trowlesworthy Warren (NRHE 439294). (11-12)
