View this record at the Archaeology Data Service

Description:Liverpool Airport was developed from 1930. Chapel Farm was initially used as a terminal until the purpose built structure was completed in late 1939. The airport was requisitioned during the Second World War, from 1940. In mid-1941 a hard perimeter track was built, dispersal pens were constructed around this. Pickett-Hamilton forts were built on the airfield along with conventional pillboxes. In 1944 the airport returned to civilian use. A new runway and terminal were built to the east and the original site was last used in 1986. (1)
The 4th edition 25" OS map of 1936 shows a number of buildings along the western perimeter of the site. A large hangar is shown in the northwest corner and a control tower is shown on the site of the terminal, adjacent to Mount Pleasant farm, then still extant.
The OS map of 1952 shows the wartime additions including runways, perimeter track with dispersal pens, the hanger to the east of the terminal and an extension of the site to the east.
