More information : (SU 650044 - SU 670040) Hilsea Lines [NAT]. (1)

The Hilsea Lines, guarding the north shore of Portsea Island, had
existed in some form since at least the early 18th century. In
1858 they were reconstructed in earth and brick and with a moat. (2)

Scheduled No. 330. (3)

The Hilsea Lines are well-preserved. 1/1250 Surveys correct. (4)

A new fort had been proposed in the 1860 Report on the Defence of the United Kingdom, but this was abandoned. The old line was replaced by a bastioned front of 3 whole and 2 demi-bastions with a wet ditch in front 130ft wide. There was space on the ramparts for 168 guns and the casemates in the flanks could hold 50 more. (5)
