More information : (SP 6058 0441) ROMAN VILLA (R) (site of) (1)

The site of (2) a Roman villa (see plans A and B (3)) situated on the south eastern slope of a hill, in a field called Castle Hill, about three furlongs from the River Thame. Excavated c 1845 by J H Parker, Dr Stubbs and Dr Buckland. The only part fully investigated was the bath building with hypocaust, lead pipe etc (see plans C and D (3)), but fragments of other walls were found (see plan A). There were plaster floors (no mention of tesserae) and walls with coloured plaster and moulding at the junction of floor and wall. Finds included nails and other iron objects, animal bones, oyster shells, fine and coarse pottery (unspecified), an Andernach mill-stone and coins of Maximinus, Salonina, Constantine and Gratian. Although the remains were covered by a 'building' for protection at the time of the excavation (2), by 1872 all remains had disappeared and the area ploughed over. Some finds went to the National School House, at Wheatley for exhibition. (2-3)

There are no indications of this site either on the ground or on available APs. (4)
