More information : SP 756367. Roman site at Thornton, beside 'Quabs' spinney, located in 1960. Excavations revealed the remains of a corridor house circa 250ft long on the higher ground, and on a lower level another building which appears to have been a barn. Between the two was an underfloor corn drying kiln from which 1st - 4th century pottery was recovered. (1,2) The site occupies a terrace slope at SP 75653672, now destroyed. (3) Mr D C Mynard (a) was able to verify, from memory, the authority 3 siting. (4)
