More information : SP 71489207. An extensive area of Roman building debris was found at West Langton by R C Read in 1970. Finds, including pottery, roofing and flue tiles, have been deposited with Leicester Museum (See No 389 1970). (1)
Trial excavations in 1974 revealed two main building blocks of a Roman villa, the west one running N to S, 20m wide by at least 48m long, the north one running E to W at least 46m long and varying from 12 to 33m wide. The walls had been robbed and the pavements damaged by ploughing. There was evidence of painted wall plaster, tesselated pavements, roof tiles and building stone, also some indications of outbuildings and of a metalled road 6m wide. (2-3)
