More information : [TF 0770 0903] Casewick Hall [T.I.] (1) Casewick, or Casuic, a lost hamlet about one mile north-east of Uffington, is mentioned in the Domesday Survey, and also in the tax list of 1334. At one time there was a chapel and nine houses, but in 1816 two houses only remained, one of which was Casewick Hall, seat of Lord Kesteven. Area under cultivation and nothing seen of any village earthworks on air photographs CRE/UK 1932 17.1.47, 1113-4. (2-5) There are no visible remains of this hamlet. (6)
An examination of all available air photography also revealed no evidence of the medieval settlement remains refered to by authority 2-5. There is an extensive field system of ridge and furrow surviving in the parkland associated with Casewick Hall suggesting there was probably a settlement in the vicinity (see TF 00 NE 16). (7) |
