Summary : The site of a Roman villa, first uncovered in 1818 when five "apartments" were uncovered. Finds included coloured stucco, broken glass, tesserae (including a tessellated pavement) and coins. Nearby, the remains of a hypocaust were found, along with further foundations and water pipes. The site was re-examined in 1929 by officers and cadet from the RAF College at Cranwell. The excavated area appears to represent the bath wing of a corridor villa. The site is scheduled as an ancient monument. |
More information : TF 01953692 Roman Villa (R) (Site of) (NAT) (1) A Roman villa was discovered on Lord Brownlow's estate at Haceby in 1818. Five apartments were uncovered, and coloured stucco, broken glass, tesserae and coins were found. About 70 yards to the south east (site plan) (2) the remains of a hypocaust were found, also the foundations of five apartments and circular water pipes. Part of a tessellated pavement was etched by William Fowler. (2) Officers and cadets of the RAF College, Cranwell re-examined the site in 1929 (8). The part cleared appears to have been the bath wing of a Corridor Villa. Scheduled Roman Villa. (3-8) The published site of this villa is now under permanent pasture. On the ground the site is proven, and represented by a shallow irregular hollow with a maximum overall diameter of 7.0m. Fragmentary building stone is evident but no associated Roman finds were made.
