More information : [TF 07937438] MOAT [G.T.] (1)
Earthworks, including the moat at Barlings House seen on air photograph [area TF 07987429]. (2)
Remains of a moat, in a field generally supposed to have been the property of Barlings Abbey. (3)
This is not a moat, but an enclosed and drained area without evidence of a building site. The surrounding land is very low-lying, obviously subject to flooding, and shows a complete network of old flood banks and (now dry) drainage ditches. Published survey (25") revised. (4)
The moat described by authorities 2-4 was seen as an earthwork on good quality air photographs and interpreted as a ditched enclosure (centred at TF 0793 7436). There is no trace of buildings within it. This enclosure may represent the principal occupation area of the Medieval monastic grange. The grange is assumed to be the initial foundation site of Barlings Abbey (5a) - see TF 07 SE 5. The ditched enclosure has several water channels leading off it, one of which has been enlarged recently to form a drinking pond for cattle (5a).
To the north (at TF 0777 7444) is a small rectangular pond with a mound next to it which probably represents the pile of spoil created during the construction of the pond (5a). To the south of the site are the earthwork remains of a Post Medieval house (TF0798 7431) and gardens (centred at TF 0808 7428), with a couple of small ponds. The house and gardens succeeded the monastic grange. The drainage ditches and flood defences described by authority 4 were also recorded and considered to be Post Medieval in date, located at TF0818 7421 and TF 0821 7405. (Morph Nos. LI.535.4.1 - 4.2, 5.1 - 5.2, 6.1 - 6.2, 7.1, 8.1, 9.1, 10.1 -10.2, 11.1)
Medieval ridge and furrow and enclosures to the south and west, possibly associated with the monastic grange have been recorded in TF 07 SE 33.
