More information : [Area TF 1012 7672] (Site of) Bullington Priory [G.T.] (Gilbertine founded c.AD 1148). (1)

The Gilbertine priory of St Mary, Bullington, was founded as a double house between 1148 and 1154, and surrendered in 1538. Scheduled. (2-4)

Earthworks visible on APs, on the north and west sides of the area have been flattened and ploughed revealing rubble over a large area [see Illustrations Card.] The central area contains amorphous grass covered mounds marking the monastic buildings. The last portion of wall that remained standing fell in 1962. Published survey (25") revised. (5)

The priory described by authorities 1-5 was visible as earthworks and cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs. Low earthwork banks, centred TF 1008 7664, represent the foundations of a complex of several monastic buildings, which are contained within a precinct enclosure, 240m by 190m. The precinct ditch has several
small fishponds associated with it.

Adjacent to the eastern side of the precinct, centred at TF 1016 7696, is an earthwork moat, 50m by 40m. Attached to its northern side, centred at TF 1009 7682, is a system of water channels and ponds, which form part of an elaborate water management system. To the west of the precinct, centred at TF 0990 7665, more water channels and ponds are visible.

A possible trackway, centred at TF 0985 7648, approaches the site from the SW.
