More information : (Name TF 13287191) Village of Butyate (GT) (Site of) (1)
Opposite to Bardney Grange. The name Butyate hardly occurs after the early part of the 13th century. In 1592, however, it reappears as "Budget", and 100 years ago a small farm on the moated site was known as Butchett farm. (2)
Earthworks, levelled in 1959 (3) may be traced on air photographs (4) at area centred TF 133717. (See Illus Card) (3-4)
The whole area is now under crop and the farmer (post 1959) has made no finds of interest during his tenancy. (5)
Listed DMV of Butyate at TF 136718. (6)
The earthworks visible on the air photographs have now been ploughed out; an extensive perambulation produced no evidence of an extensive occupation and no early building material was found. (7)
Fieldwalking has produced much Medieval and some Post-Medieval pottery from the areas of earthworks on both sides of the by-road. Finds in Lincoln Museum. (8)
The Medieval settlement of Butyate described by the previous authorities was visible as cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs. Fragmentary ditched enclosures are centred at TF 1339 7180. Associated with the enclosures are four ponds, centred at TF 1345 7182 and TF 1327 7191. These ponds were not interpreted as a moat, as described by authority 2. (Morph No. LI.580.3.1-3)
