More information : All Saints' Hospital, Holbeach, for a warden and fifteen poor persons, was founded by Sir John of Kirton, in 1351. It had ceased to exist before the suppression of chantries and hospitals. William Stukeley, who was born at Holbeach in 1687, considered the site near the church where the Chequers Inn stands (3) to have been the site of the hospital. He remembered the remains of an ancient building, with carved stonework, arched doorways and mullioned windows being taken down by his father. (1-3) The Chequers Inn (at TF 35912484) is wholly 18c.-20c. in construction. No adjacent buildings appear earlier. (4)
