More information : [TF 49885926] St. Thomas's Church [GT] (Site of). (1) The village of Wainfleet St. Thomas, or Northolme is lost. Early records do not differentiate between Wainfleet All Saints, Wainfleet St. Mary, and Wainfleet St. Thomas or Northolme. An undated, but probably 13th century deed of gift to Bardney Abbey appears to be the first distinct mention of "North Wenfled". Northolme, or Wainfleet St. Thomas, is mentioned in the Feudal Aid of 1316 and in 1546. The chapel of Northolme belonged, before the Reformation, to Kyme Priory, and it was still standing at the time of the Protectorate. There is no further mention of it, and nothing remains. A cottage adjoining the burial ground, "which is still in use," (3) was probably built out of the materials of the chapel. Slight traces of works are visible east and west of the church [area TF 499593 on air photographs]. [See TF 55 NW 3 for moat within area and TF 55 NW 4 for Northolme Manor House.] (2-5) The site is now used as an additional cemetery adjoining the graveyard. Mr. J.W. Smalley, (gravedigger) 4 Council Cottages, Thorpe, recalls heavy building stone having been found when graves were being dug at the church site. No surface evidence of desertion could be traced. (6)
