Hob Uid: 357416
Location :
Norfolk

Grimston
Grid Ref : TF7160021600
Summary : The fragmentary remains of a Roman courtyard villa were excavated in 1906. Finds including painted wall plaster, tessellated floors and a bath suite were discovered. The site was largely destroyed by clay pit digging.
More information : (TF7177 2166) Roman Villa (R) Site of (NAT) (1)

The villa is sketched in on an OS 25" plan at the place where the
symbol is published. Tesserae found 1905 villa, with plan as
attached, excavated 1906 under Major Bale.

Finds include tiles, painted wall plaster, nails, bronze fibulae,
animal bones, antlers and shells. Samian and other pottery, but
no coins. Much of the villa is considered to have been destroyed
when the clay pit (to the west of the excavation) was dug. (2)

At the indicated site, which falls in a pasture field, is a
slightly elevated platform with substantial surface disturbance.
Adjacent to the west, are the remains of the clay pit, so this is
almost certainly the site of the villa. No surface finds were made.
Also, in the same field, to the west of the villa and to the south
of the track, (TF 72 SW 8) and along its entire length is an area
of non-surveyable earthworks (centred TF7160 2160) which although
forming no coherent pattern probably represents former occupation. (3)
