Summary : Manor house, now house and office. Late 14th century or early 15th century for the Wake family. Wings added to heightened open hall house in 16th century and 17th century. Altered in 19th century and 20th century. Timber frame on red brick sill. Roughcast on front and West, but frame exposed with large square panels at rear and East. Steep old red tile roofs and red brick chimneys. A large H-plan, 2-storeys house facing South. One and a half storeys 17th century service wing to North of West wing, roughcast but 18th century red and black brick North gable with 19th century projecting gable chimney. Cross-passage at West end of hall behind inserted chimney, possibly replacing a timber framed hood in late 19th century. |
More information : (TL 26712533) Chells (NAT). (1) Manor house of c.1600 with 17th cent additions. Although little altered it is in good condition. In 1896 fire destroyed the outbuildings. A short length of moat is supposed to have existed at one time.(3). (2-4) The house is timber framed, mostly pebble-dashed. There are two double jettied gables on the south front. Not outstanding. No traces of a moat are to be seen, a pond to the south-east being no more than a simple farm pond. (5) TL 266253. Listed as a deserted Medieval village by Rutherford Davis (6) but rejected by MVRG (7). Four tenants are listed in Domesday. (6-7) Chells or Chells Manor House, Grade 2*. (8) Chells Manor has been converted into office accommodation for the General Accident Insurance group. Two of the original outbuildings have been retained at the rear of the building TL 26692531. TL 26672532. Chells Manor is now engulfed within a modern housing development, except for part of the field immediately to the W. TL 26602532. No field evidence was seen to indicate the former presence of a D.M.V. (9)
