More information : SK 6322 0204 Moat in Stoughton parish. (1) This feature has been filled in levelled off and grassed over. Sited adjacent to Stoughton Grange Farm, it was almost certainly the location of the monastic grange, later manor, that once belonged to the Abbey of Leicester . (2)
SK 630022 Courtney quotes documentary sources regarding Stoughton Grange dating from the foundation of Leicester Abbey in the mid 12th century, when the manor of Stoughton was granted to the Abbey by Earl Robert 'le Bossu' and from 1301 a series of post Dissolution references recording the changes of ownership of the grange. The medieval grange almost certainly lies beneath the present 'Stoughton Grange'. (3)
The original site of the grange appears to have been at SK 6389 0213 - see SK 60 SW 40 which seems "to have moved to the south-west of the parish in the late 15th century". This later location probably equates with the present site. (4) |
