Summary : Benedictine nunnery founded 1125-35 dissolved 1525. Small scale excavations in 1964 revealed the foundations of the chancel to the East of the modern church. The North wall of the chancel, dated to the 13th century, is aligned with the North wall of the present modern church, the North wall of which is also 13th century, and of 3 arcades. A stone coffin was also found.
More information : (TM 1648 2909) Site of (NAT) Priory (NR) (Benedictine nuns founded 1123-33) (NAT) (1) Priory of St. Mary was founded about 1123-33 and dissolved in 1525 (2). All that now remains are parts of the west wall, and North arcade of the present church of St. Michaels (TM 16342902) (3) but excavations following the discovery of stone coffin in 1961 revealed the footings of priory buildings in the field immediately to the east of the church (see illust card) (4). Air photograph taken by I. McMasters in 1974 shows original extent of Priory Church (5). (2-6)
