TQ 0106: Tarrant Street, Arundel: Substantial Roman building. (3)
Traces of a heated room, possibly late 1stc or early 2ndc found in roadworks trench outside 60 Tarrant Street, Arundel. A chalk wall running in direction of river cut through hypocaust tiles. Some black and white mosaic, diamond-pattern flue-tiles and roofing tiles were also found. (4)
The line of the trench, dug in 1968, is still visible outside No 60 Tarrant Street, along the N side of the road, at TQ 01540692. (5)
Floor level located beneath the north wall of the cellar of 95 Tarrant Street, and a chalk-lined well beneath the west wall, during house alterations. (6)
Excavation in advance of building development in 1983 uncovered the medieval street frontage and a chalk-lined well. Beneath the medieval house were the footings and robber trenches of the Roman villa. A quantity of painted wall plaster was recovered. Dateable material is mainly of 1st to 3rd centuries AD, the box-flue tiles indicating a second half of the 1st century construction date. Excavations by the water front revealed timbers and other late-to-post-medieval material. (7-8)
