Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1044935

Hob Uid: 1044935
Location :
City of Peterborough
Castor
Grid Ref : TL1360096900
Summary : Disproved Roman road at Castor, suggested by cropmarks, now thought to be medieval plough headland remains
More information : Roman road linking the branch road RR 250 to a ossible wharf site [See Associated Monument Records] by the River Nene at Durobrivae. Suggested by linear earthworks an cropmarks. [See OS Linear Archive for bibliography to 1967]. (1)

Accepted as a Roman road by RCHME. (2)

Excavation in 1984 (as yet unpublished to my knowledge) of a section across the linear earthwork near its eastern terminus in fields adjacent to the Nene suggested that it is in fact a medieval headland. (3)
