Summary : Broad Arrow Tower at the Tower of London was built between 1238 and 1275 to a D-shaped plan with rectangular turrets to the north and south. It occupies a position on the east side of the inner curtain wall. It is of 2 storeys, the second being added in the late C19. It was restored by Salvin between 1855 and 1857. The height of its defences were increased during works by Edward I leaving the original postern in the curtain wall some 2.8m above ground level. The tower was used as a prison and contains many inscription made by prisoners held here in the 16th and 17th centuries including Giovanni Battista Castiglione, the Italian tutor of Princess Elizabeth. |
