Summary : The now ruined Chapel of the Charnel was the former charnel house of Bury St Edmunds Abbey. It was built from rubble flint with stone dressings in the late 13th century by John of Northwold. Now roofless, the walls both inside and outside are covered with memorial tablets, mostly dating from the first half of the 14th century. The charnel house stood in the abbey cemetery; its vaulted crypt used for storing human skeletal remains.The site of Bury St Edmunds Abbey is under the guardianship of English Heritage.

The Chapel of the Charnel was founded by Abbot John de Norwold and stood on a vaulted crypt for bones. (2)

The memorial tablets on the walls mostly date from the first half of the 14th century. The charnel house stood in the abbey cemetery. (3)
