At the Mount, just south of Maidstone Barracks and north of the railway station, part of the [eastern] bank of the river fell in 1843 and disclosed Roman masonry. Further examinations revealed part of an extensive villa. [See plan AO/63/196/4] (2-3)
No material from this site appears to be held by Maidstone Museum. The site is covered by tippings and a timber yard and there is nothing of significance to be seen. (4)
Limited excavations in 1970/71 confirmed Dr. Charles' findings and substantiated the existence of a substantial Roman building with a frontage to the Medway of well over 150 feet. The southern side of the building appeared to have consisted of a corridor which was later partitioned. (5)

Five trial trenches excavated in January 1992 revealed part of a mortared surface and a section of the wall excavated by D Kelly in the 1970s. This was identified as one of the buttresses from the east end of the external wall of the main north range of the villa. (15)
