Summary : Traces of a Roman courtyard villa uncovered in 1870 in a field east of the road to Loose and 250 yards south east of St Philips Church. Further evidence was found in 1929 during the building of the Boys Grammar School. Nothing is now visible on the ground and no further finds were made when a house was erected a few yards from the site. |

Walls of a Roman villa, suggestive of a courtyard type, were uncovered at Maidstone in 1870 in a field east of the road to Loose and 250 yards south-east of St Philips Church. [See plan AO/LP/63/98]. (2-3)
Traces of the villa were found while building the Boys Grammar School in 1929 but no details are given and nothing more is known at Maidstone Museum. Nothing is visible on the ground and no further finds were made when a house was erected some years ago a few yards from the siting given. No further information was obtained at the school where a watch for such evidence has been kept. (4)
