Summary : An officers mess at the former Driffield airfield site, now Alamein Barracks. It was built between 1935 and 1938. The mess is built of brick with a hipped roof. Originally the building took the form of a central block flanked by "L"-shaped wings on each side, however the western wing was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing in August 1940. To the rear of the main two storey block is a single storey brick entrance annexe at right angles to the centre of the main building. This is gabled. The building was extant but disused in 1998-1999. |
More information : An officers mess at the former Driffield airfield site, now Alamein Barracks. It was built between 1935 and 1938. The mess is built of brick with a hipped roof. Originally the building took the form of a central block flanked by "L"-shaped wings on each side, however the western wing was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing in August 1940. To the rear of the main two storey block is a single storey brick entrance annexe at right angles to the centre of the main building. This is gabled. The building was extant but disused in 1999.
