More information : (SW 96576960) Burial Chamber (NR)

"A long barrow 70ft by 50ft (Lukis's measurements) orientated
north-south, with a ruined rectangular chamber at the south end.
The chamber consists of nine orthostats forming a rectangle 7ft
long by 3ft 6in wide and supporting a capstone .... Hencken,
however, writes that the site could "hardly be called a long
barrow and it is very likely that originally it was round".

The chamber sits off centre but on the summit of a 1.6m high
mound measuring aproximately 2/8m N-S x 22m E-W. This lengthening
of one axis is probably due to the downhill slope to the north,
the only direction in which the slopes are exaggerated. Hencken's
contention would therefore seem to be correct. Resurveyed at
1:2500. (3)

"Pawton Quoit". Part of the capstone is said to be broken off.
The quoit stands on a long low tumulus but on digging through
the mound nothing was found. (4)

No change since report of 24.1.72. (5)

Surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD. (6)

A flint scatter was located around the chambered tomb during fieldwalking in 1984. Two artefacts were recorded with the flint flakes; an end scraper and a transverse arrowhead. (7)

(SW 965697) Included in a catalogue and distribution map of Neolithic sites in Cornwall. (8)
