Summary : Remains of a medieval moat within which is the 18th century Moat House. The moat is now dry and forms a feature in the garden of the house. The moat is square with stone lined sides. The material removed to make the moat was used to build a small dam. There is a causewayed entrance on the east side but the original entrance was via a bridge to the north. The moat is scheduled, the house is excluded from the scheduling.
More information : (SD 6003 0909) Moat (NR). (1) Homestead Moat at Moat House. (Earthwork Class F). (2) Now completely dry, the original extent of the moat is still discernible, although much obscured and utilised by a heavily over- grown sunken garden in the W, S, and E arms. The N arm is partly filled in by outbuildings. The approach to the modern "Moat House" is in the SE but it is not clear if this is original. Published Survey (25") correct. (3)
