More information : [SD 66233564] Ribchester Bridge [T.I.] (1) The present Ribchester Bridge, across the R.Ribble "was built in 1774 in place of one washed away two years earlier which had stood since 1669. A bridge existed at Ribchester as early as the fourteenth century, as amongst the Townley MSS is a charter quoted in Whitakers (a) ...., giving permission in the year 1354 for the building of a bridge of wood or stone." (2) In 1669 the old bridge (when erected is unknown) was replaced by the bridge which in 1772 was washed away by a flood. The present bridge was built in 1774. (3) The present bridge and approaches are all of one period of construction. There are no traces of an earlier bridge on the site or nearby. (4)
