County: Gloucestershire
District: FOREST OF DEAN
Parish: AWRE
NGR: SO 65 08
Monument Number: 449
HER 449 DESCRIPTION:-
Scheduling Description -
See DoE SAM file for description. {Source Work 2873.}
SO65290872
NMR Monument - Long Listing notes:-
No certain remains of Roman workmanship can be detected in the fabric of Blackpool Bridge, which appears to be basically a Medieval stone-ribbed-arched bridge with late or modern widening to both sides and recent concrete retaining walls added to the north end on the west side. A couple of courses of unmortared squared stone blocks beneath the east side at the south end might be the last remains of an earlier bridge on the site. Equally it could have been inserted at a later date to hold the approach bank in place. {Source Work 4249.}

1999 - A management plan was undertaken by Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service on the site. The main issues to be addressed were identified as maintaining the exposed section of road surface to the south of Blackpool Bridge, clearing undergrowth and young trees from the area especially close to the probable area of the Dean Road to the north. {Source Work 5770.}
1999 - Two site visits were made by J Hoyle of Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service in connection with repair works to a damaged parapet on 02/12/1999 and 08/12/1999. The works were already underway by the time of the first site visit. A trench had been dug which revealed a partial section through the carriageway of the road which crosses the bridge. No evidence for earlier road surfaces were visible in the exposed section. At the time of the visit the lower parapet wall had already been rebuilt, concrete had been laid in the lower part of the trench and steel concrete reinforcing bars were in place. So this section could not be examined. At the time of the second visit repair works were not complete but the section had been obscured by poured concrete so no further observations could be made. Photographs were taken which are stored in the site file. {Source Work 484.}
2006 - The management plan produced in 1999 was revised in 2006 with the main issues remaining the same. A rapid site visit was carried out in January 2006. {Source Work 8596}.
2009 SMC received for the repair of missing sandstone coping stones and the repair of a crack with mortar. {Source Work 484.}
2014 Updated management plan. See Source Work 12622.
