Summary : 1703 wreck of British fourth rate ship of the line which stranded at Chichester after being blown out of Spithead during the 'Great Storm' according to contemporary accounts [later accounts state that she foundered at Spithead]: a wooden sailing vessel.
More information : At anchor at Spithead, and foundered there, with the loss of 193 men including the captain. 40 men saved from the wreck. (1)(4)

The NEWCASTLE built at Ratcliffe 1653 and rebuilt at Rotherhithe 1692. (2)

In the Great Storm which occurred on 26-NOV-1703, the NEWCASTLE of 50 guns, Captain William Carter, was lost at Spithead. Her captain perished with her, and nearly 200 of her crew. (3)

`Portsmouth, from on board the MEDWAY, Nov. 28. The LICHFIELD PRIZE of 40 guns is lost; the RESOLUTION, NEWCASTLE forced ashore.' (8)

`There having been various and confused accounts given last week of the loss sustained amongst Her Majesty's ships of war in the late storm, we present the public with the following authentic list of all that are irrecoverably lost...

`The NEWCASTLE, a fourth rate, Capt. Carter, lost at Spithead. The carpenter and 23 men were saved, the rest drowned.' (9)

`At Portsmouth was a great fleet, as has been noted already, several of the ships were blown quite out to sea, whereof some were never heard of more; the NEWCASTLE was heard off upon the Coast of Sussex, where she was lost with all their men but 23...' (10)

Fourth rate, NEWCASTLE, of 233 men and 46 guns, William Carter, drove from Spithead, and lost upon the coast near Chichester; carpenter and 23 men saved. (10)

`Portsmouth, Nov 27. Last night we had a very violent storm of wind. We have insight 6 or 7 Wrecks, 4 or 5 of them to the Eastward of South-Sea Castle, and two upon Gikeker Point.' (11)
