Summary : Two Roman figurines of a sphinxs, one of stone, the other bronze, were found in the garden of the general hospital in the 1820s.
More information : (TL 98892489) Roman sphinxs found AD 1820 and 1821 (NAT) (1) Sphinx, sculptured in stone and found in 1821 in the garden of the general hospital, in Colchester Museum. A bronze statuette of a sphinx 1.5 inches high was found in 1820, within a few yards of the former. (Siting in (1) agrees with detailed description). (2-3)
