More information :

(SU593 011) Fort Rowner (NAT) (1)

Fort Rowner (SU594 011)

This was the second of the gap-fillers in the defensive line and was also begun in 1858. Built, like the other two, of brick, the Inspector of Works condemned the construction as being faulty and the contractor was fired in 1862, the work being taken over by the Royal Engineers and rebuilt using military labour. If nothing else, they at least made sure that the ditch would hold water, which was more than could be said for some of the original contractor's excuses.

Its subsequent career was undistinguished, serving as a barrack for a variety of units until being taken over by the Royal Navy who now, according to the notice outside, run it as a Degaussing Establishment. (2)

No change - as above. (3)

Documented. (4)

The fort and associated buildings was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England: Gosport HAZ (Heritage Action Zone) and Alver Valley Aerial Investigation and Mapping project.(5)
