More information : Two contiguous rectangular enclosures are visible as earthworks and have been mapped from aerial photographs at SU 2546 7935. Each is defined by a single ditch with dimensions of 45m x 35m and 30m x 25m.
The enclosures are most likely to be of Prehistoric or Roman date, and may be associated with field system earthworks and finds of settlement evidence in the immediate vicinity (SU 27 NE 4, SU 27 NE 5, SU 27 NW 12 SU 27 NE 104, SU 27 NE ??). The southern ditch of a Roman road (Ermin Street) appears to cut the northernmost side of each enclosure, which may indicate that the enclosures are earlier than the road. Enclosures of this type could also be Medieval. (1) |
