Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1546275

Hob Uid: 1546275
Location :
Medway
Hoo St. Werburgh
Grid Ref : TQ7597671533
Summary : A possible First World War redoubt or practice fieldwork is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The site appears as a U-shaped enclosure comprising a very slight crenellated bank and ditch. A possible weapons pit or gun emplacement is incorporated into the east end of the bank. The enclosure is situated on Hoo Common about 135m to the north east of the Beacon Hill First World War anti aircraft battery (Monument 1474255). This part of Hoo Common is noted on a War Department map of Lodge Hill field defences, 1914-16, as part of the "New field works ground". The crenellated enclosure is very similar in overall appearance to other earthworks described on the War Department map as redoubts (for example Monuments 1546165 and 1546125), and also to nearby field works on Hoo Common (Monuments 1546221 and 1546255). It bears some resemblance to practice works on the main area of the First World War field works ground 700m to the west (Monument 1545095), particularly a group of trenches near Islingham Farm.
