Summary : Woodford railway station opened in 1856 as an intermediate station on the Stratford-Loughton section of the steam operated Eastern Counties Railway line, which ultimately became part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1921. The station was rebuilt between 1888 and 1892. The eastwards extension of the Central line as part of the 1935-40 New Works Programme took in this former LNER route. Woodford was first served by Central line trains on 14th December 1947 as part of an extension from Leytonstone to Woodford. For the arrival of the Central line the westbound ticket hall was partly rebuilt and a brick building was added on the eastbound platform. The retreating LNER steam trains to Epping and Ongar terminated in platform 2 and the tube trains in platfrom 1, to give easy interchange. |
