Summary : Site of an Iron Age/Romano-British mixed cemetery, the pottery spans the Iron Age and the whole Roman period.
More information : An extensive cemetery in the Abbey Field (TL 9924) found when the barracks were built commencing in 1872. Many graves and hundreds of pottery vessels were cut thorugh by drains and foundation trenches. They were concentrated in the area of Le Cateau Barracks (TL 993245) and the football fiels (TL 995244) but extending south to Sobraon Barracks (TL 993237). Cremations and inhumations were found, some in lead coffins, and the pottery from the burials, in Colchester Museum, represent the whole Roman period and include some of the Iron Age. Excavations in 1971 in St John's Abbey (at TL 998248) recognised the underlying cemetery. (1-3)
