Summary : Kilburn opend as Kilburn and Brondesbury on 24th November 1879 by the Metropolitan Railway. The station became part of the Bakerloo line in 1939, when the London Passenger Transport Board opened a new section of twin tube tunnels between Baker Street and Finchley Road creating a branch to Stanmore. The station opened to Bakerloo line trains on 20th Novermber 1939 and a new south side entrance was built in connection with the Bakerloo extension. The round ended waiting room at Kilburn is a feature that was first introduced at South Ealing in 1936 and employed throughout the reconstruction of the Metropolitan line in the 1930s. The station ceased serving Metropolitan line trains in 1940 and changed its name to Kilburn in 1950. Kilburn's role as a Bakerloo line halt came to an end in 1979 when, on 1st May of that year, the Bakerloo line branch from Baket Street to Stanmore was taken over by the new Jubilee line. |
