Summary : Opened as Aldersgate Street on 23rd December 1865 as a cut-and-cover station on the Metropolitan Railway. The cutting was spanned by a glazed arch which has a span of 80-feet. However, the glass disintergrated in the air raids and the frame was taken down in 1955. In 1910 the station was renamed Aldersgate and in 1923 it was further renamed Aldersgate and Barbican. In 1968 Aldersgate disappeared from the name altogether when it was renamed Barbican. The station is now also served by Thameslink trains. |
