More information : (TQ 33618073) MW5, Tower Hill, 1936. During excavations beneath what was then the cellar floor of No. 19 Tower Hill, were found the remains of a turret, not quite rectangular, built against the inner side of the city wall. It had an internal lenth (measured parallel with the wall) of 11ft, and a width (measured at right angles to the wall) of 6ft. The turret walls were 2ft 8ins thick. Its purpose was probably to accommodate a stair-case giving access to the ramparts. The houses on this and the adjoining sites were destroyed by bombing, and the area has since been laid out as a garden, with the norther part of the turret visible.
