More information : (SE 13398733) Roman Hypocaust (R) (Remains of). (1) This consists of a stoned hole in the ground (about 4' sq and 1 1/2-2' deep). (2) A channelled hypocaust excav 1881 (3) and 1906 (4) cleared again by R L Bruce Mitford in 1940 (5). "The stone-built room measured internally 12' x 15' and was heated by a stokehole in the N wall by means of two cross-flues 2 1/2' high and 15" wide made at right angles through the substructure and by a flue running round the walls, in three of which were seven recesses to hold vertical brick pipes. On the fourth side no wall survived, but across the centre, built up on concrete, was a threshold stone about 8' 6" x 1'1", with holes and shoes for the hinges... The white concrete floor (apparently polished) of the room rested on large stones and tiles. "Furnace 1' wide and vaulted. Fragment of black unglazed pottery found. Excavations in the neighbourhood failed to trace further buildings. (3-5) Remain of the hypocaust have now been filled in, and the site is only marked by disturbed ground and one or two large worked stones. Published survey (25") revised. (6)
