HER 5288 DESCRIPTION:- (5288/1) - The shaft of the modern village cross at Westbury is carried in a socket, probably dating from 12th C, which was found in 1862 built into S wall of the former 13thC chantry chapel of St. Mary. {1} As described. {2} The restored villge cross stands by the side of the A48; only the C12 socket stone, found built into the church tower during restoration work c.1862, is original. It is square to octagon above with hollow chamfers at the corners. It was restored in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. (4973) (5288/2) - Further along the road at Six Bells (SO 722138), is another base which is octagonal, although it is so worn it appears to be almost round. The shaft has been cut off level with the top of the stone. (4973) |
