More information : (Centred TF 1206) A group of farmsteads and enclosures, with fragments of droveways, also pit-alignments and isolated ring-ditches, on the Welland Gravels. Revealed by air photographs. Two main periods identified. (a) Small irregular enclosures IA/RB up to 2nd c AD and (b) larger enclosures more rectlinear 3rd c RB. The pit alignments maybe IA or early RB. Four of the ring ditches are BA barrows and the other may be an IA hut. See Map Diagram. (1-3) APs show that the crop-marks continue eastwards into Etton parish, occupying almost all the area S of the South Drain and N of the Brook Drain, and bounded on the E by the A15. (4-7) The area is almost entirely arable land; no visible remains. (8)
Aerial reconnaissance photography shows a number of rectilinear enclosures abutting sinuous and linear trackways, visible as cropmarks centred at TF 1480 0653. Further linears and pit alignments are visible at TF 1434 0670, with two probable Bronze Age round barrows showing as cropmark ring ditches at TF 1442 0679. Another probable barrow ring ditch and a half circle of pits are visible at TF 1234 0657. (9-11)
The complex settlement and field system of later prehistoric/Roman date is also visible on Historic England Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken 24th June 2015. It extends to the west and east of Etton, comprising a multitude of adjoining rectilinear and curvilinear enclosures, trackways and field boundaries. The densest concentration of activity is centred at TF 1435 0630, presumably a settlement. Numerous Bronze Age round barrow ring ditches are also visible in the landscape, though some of these have been recorded separately. (12) |
