Lanthorn Tower
Hob Uid:
1100848
Location :
Greater London Authority
Tower Hamlets
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref :
TQ3364080470
Summary :
Lanthorn Tower at the Tower of London was built c.1225. It has been suggested that it possibly originated as a Roman mural tower due to the similarity in dimension and spacing. It was demolished in 1776 after being gutted by fire. It was considered to be of an unusual design as it had three storeys rather than two. At the height of its use it contained royal chambers of Henry III. It was rebuilt in 1883 with lancets and 2-light windows.
