Summary : Deserted Medieval settlement, first mentioned in Domesday. Earthworks are visible as turf covered building foundations, field walls and banks, lynchets, mounds, hollows and trackways spread along both sides of the Gypsey Race. The main concentration of foundations were still relatively preserved when visited in 1974 and are consistent with the suggestion that they represent 16th century courtyard farmsteads, but some have been ploughed out. |
More information : Sites (A = SE 880672, B = SE 884673, C = SE 887671, D = SE 892670, E = SE 895670) Old Foundations (NAT) 5 times. (1) SE 895670 DMV of Mowthorpe, mentioned in Domesday; probably a casualty of the Black Death. Earthworks of this small site lie between two surviving villages on the S bank of the Dale and shared the same right of way, now a footpath. (2) The earthworks at Duggleby (SE 884673) may be the remains of a 16th c Courtyard Fm. (3) 'A' No trace of earthworks. B and C, the earthwork pattern corresponds with Beresford's description of a courtyard farm or farms. C, a number of small banked enclosures - surrounded by a bank. D and E. House foundations and road clearly visible, probably the actual DMV site. (4) The remains of this DMV are visible as turf-covered rectangular building foundations, field walls and banks, lynchets, occasional amorphous mounds, hollows, and trackways spread along both sides of the Gypsey Race from SE 87688718 eastwards to SE 89988918. The main concentration of foundations appears to have been at B (SE 88326727) where remains are still relatively well preserved and are consistent with farmsteads as suggested by Beresford. There have been and still are some smaller groups less well preserved at A (SE 88006721) and E (SE 89596711) the latter no longer representing any sort of nucleated village. Those at C (SE 88718913) and D (SE 89216702) have been completely ploughed out leaving no trace. Published Survey (25") Revised. (5)
